Dental Checkups & Cleanings

Regular dental checkups are the foundation of a healthy smile. At Madison Dental Art, every checkup includes a full oral exam, professional cleaning, and digital X-rays when needed — so we can catch cavities, gum disease, and other issues before they become costly problems. Most patients only need two visits a year to stay ahead of trouble.

Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns A crown is a full-coverage restoration that slips over a damaged or weakened tooth to bring back its strength, shape, and function. Whether your tooth has cracked, worn down, or had a root canal, a custom crown from Madison Dental Art will look and feel just like the original — built to last for 10–15 years with proper care.

Dental Fillings

When a cavity forms, a quick filling is all it takes to stop the damage. We use tooth-colored composite materials that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth — no silver, no metal, no visible trace. The procedure takes about 30–60 minutes, and most patients leave the same day with a restored, comfortable bite.

Root Canal Therapy

An infected or abscessed tooth doesn't always have to be extracted. Root canal therapy removes the infected tissue inside the tooth, clears the infection, and seals the tooth so it can stay in place — saving your natural smile. With modern techniques and our anesthesia options, most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience actually is.

Tooth Extractions

Dental Crowns Sometimes a tooth is too damaged or decayed to save. When that happens, a safe, gentle extraction is the best path forward to protect your surrounding teeth and oral health. Our team performs both simple and surgical extractions, and we'll always discuss your replacement options — implants, bridges, or dentures — before you leave.

When Should You See a General Dentist?

You don’t need to wait until something hurts. In fact, the most expensive dental problems are the ones that go unnoticed — until they don’t. Schedule an appointment if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • A toothache or sharp pain when biting or chewing

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the temperature is gone

  • Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing

  • A tooth that feels loose or has visibly shifted

  • A chip, crack, or broken tooth — even if it’s not painful yet

  • Swelling, soreness, or a bump on your gums or jaw

  • It’s been more than 6 months since your last cleaning

You don’t need a referral. Just call us — we’ll get you in quickly and tell you exactly what’s going on.

Why Forest Hills Families Choose Madison Dental Art

Over 30 years of serving Queens has taught us one thing: patients stay when they feel genuinely cared for.

  • 30+ years of experience in Forest Hills — Dr. Alexander Chao has led our practice since 1994 and has built lasting relationships with thousands of Queens families across generations.
  • Advanced diagnostic technology — We use digital X-rays and the ORTHOPHOS XG 3D panoramic scanner for precise, early detection — the same equipment used by top specialty practices.
  • Everything under one roof — From preventive cleanings to crowns, fillings, and extractions, you won’t need to be referred elsewhere for most procedures.
  • Same-day and same-week appointments — Because dental problems don’t always happen on schedule, we keep time available for urgent needs.
  • Most major insurance accepted — We verify your benefits before your visit so there are no surprises at checkout.
  • A team that knows your name — Our multilingual staff serves the diverse Forest Hills community, and many of our patients have been with us for decades.

What Happens at a General Dentistry Checkup?

If it’s been a while since your last visit — or you’ve never been sure what actually happens during a routine appointment — here’s exactly what to expect at Madison Dental Art.

Step 1

1.Medical & Dental History Review We start by updating your health history — any new medications, conditions, or concerns since your last visit. This helps us personalize your care and flag anything that could affect your treatment.

Step 2

2. Digital X-Rays (When Needed) We take low-radiation digital X-rays to check for cavities between teeth, bone loss, and other issues invisible to the naked eye. Most patients need updated X-rays once a year.

Step 3

3. Full Oral Examination Dr. Chao or one of our dentists examines every tooth, your gums, your bite, and your soft tissue — checking for decay, gum disease, early signs of oral cancer, and anything that needs attention.

Step 4

4.Professional Cleaning (Prophylaxis) Our hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing can’t reach — especially along the gumline and between teeth. This is the most important step in preventing gum disease.

Step 5

5.Treatment Plan & Recommendations If we find anything that needs attention, we’ll explain it clearly — with X-rays and images you can see — and give you your options. No pressure, no surprises. Just an honest conversation about your oral health.

Note

The whole appointment typically takes 45–60 minutes. For most patients with good oral health, two visits per year is all it takes to stay healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry

How often should I see a general dentist?

Most adults should visit the dentist every 6 months for a checkup and cleaning. If you have gum disease, a history of cavities, or other ongoing dental concerns, Dr. Chao may recommend more frequent visits — typically every 3–4 months.

Yes. Digital X-rays use up to 80% less radiation than traditional film X-rays and provide clearer images for more accurate diagnosis. At Madison Dental Art, we only take X-rays when clinically necessary — not on a fixed schedule.

Absolutely. You don’t need a referral to schedule an appointment at Madison Dental Art. We welcome new patients from Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, Jackson Heights, Jamaica, and all of Queens. Just call or book online.

You’re not alone — many of our patients come to us specifically because of their fear of the dentist. Dr. Chao is known for his calm, patient approach. We explain every step before we begin, and for certain procedures, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax comfortably.

A standard appointment takes between 45 and 60 minutes. If it’s your first visit or if we need to take a full series of X-rays, plan for up to 90 minutes. We do our best to run on schedule so you’re never kept waiting.

Most dental insurance plans cover preventive care — including twice-yearly cleanings and exams — at little or no cost to you. We accept most major plans and will verify your coverage before your visit so you know exactly what to expect.
