What Happens at a General Dentistry Checkup?

1.Medical & Dental History Review We start by updating your health history — any new medications, conditions, or concerns since your last visit. This helps us personalize your care and flag anything that could affect your treatment.

2. Digital X-Rays (When Needed) We take low-radiation digital X-rays to check for cavities between teeth, bone loss, and other issues invisible to the naked eye. Most patients need updated X-rays once a year.

3. Full Oral Examination Dr. Chao or one of our dentists examines every tooth, your gums, your bite, and your soft tissue — checking for decay, gum disease, early signs of oral cancer, and anything that needs attention.
Step 4
4.Professional Cleaning (Prophylaxis) Our hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing can’t reach — especially along the gumline and between teeth. This is the most important step in preventing gum disease.

5.Treatment Plan & Recommendations If we find anything that needs attention, we’ll explain it clearly — with X-rays and images you can see — and give you your options. No pressure, no surprises. Just an honest conversation about your oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry
How often should I see a general dentist?
Most adults should visit the dentist every 6 months for a checkup and cleaning. If you have gum disease, a history of cavities, or other ongoing dental concerns, Dr. Chao may recommend more frequent visits — typically every 3–4 months.
Are digital X-rays safe?
Yes. Digital X-rays use up to 80% less radiation than traditional film X-rays and provide clearer images for more accurate diagnosis. At Madison Dental Art, we only take X-rays when clinically necessary — not on a fixed schedule.
Do you accept new patients without a referral?
Absolutely. You don’t need a referral to schedule an appointment at Madison Dental Art. We welcome new patients from Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, Jackson Heights, Jamaica, and all of Queens. Just call or book online.
What if I have dental anxiety?
You’re not alone — many of our patients come to us specifically because of their fear of the dentist. Dr. Chao is known for his calm, patient approach. We explain every step before we begin, and for certain procedures, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax comfortably.
How long does a routine cleaning and checkup take?
A standard appointment takes between 45 and 60 minutes. If it’s your first visit or if we need to take a full series of X-rays, plan for up to 90 minutes. We do our best to run on schedule so you’re never kept waiting.
Does insurance cover general dentistry checkups?
Most dental insurance plans cover preventive care — including twice-yearly cleanings and exams — at little or no cost to you. We accept most major plans and will verify your coverage before your visit so you know exactly what to expect.
