Cracked Tooth Treatment: Repair and Relieve the Pain

If you’re feeling sudden pain while chewing or drinking hot or cold beverages, you may be dealing with a cracked tooth. This type of dental damage can lead to serious issues if left untreated. Luckily, with the right diagnosis and cracked tooth repair, your dentist can address the problem and relieve your discomfort effectively.

What is a Cracked Tooth?

A cracked tooth occurs when a fracture forms on the enamel or deeper layers of the tooth. Often referred to as Cracked Tooth Syndrome, this condition can cause sharp pain, sensitivity, and discomfort, especially when chewing. Cracks can be visible or hidden beneath the gum line, and the severity of the damage varies from minor surface lines to vertical splits.

about Cracked Tooth

Common Causes

Cracked teeth can happen for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Biting hard foods like nuts, hard candy, or ice.
  • Trauma to the face or mouth from sports or accidents.
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism), especially at night.
  • Large fillings that weaken the natural tooth structure.
  • Sudden temperature changes, such as eating something hot then drinking something cold.

Symptoms to Watch For

Recognizing the signs of a cracked tooth can help you take action early. Watch for these symptoms:

  • Pain when chewing or biting down.
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods.
  • Swollen gums around a specific tooth.
  • Discomfort that comes and goes without an obvious cause.
  • A visible crack or line on the tooth’s surface.

Diagnosis and Evaluation

Your dentist will evaluate the cracked tooth through a variety of methods, including:

  • Visual inspection under bright light or magnification.
  • Applying special dental dye to highlight cracks.
  • Bite tests to pinpoint the source of pain.
  • X-rays to check for fractures extending to the root.
  • Gum evaluation for signs of inflammation or infection.

Treatment Options

  • Treatment for a cracked tooth using dental bonding or resin for minor surface cracks
  • Dental crown to protect and strengthen the tooth.
  • Root canal treatment if the crack affects the tooth’s pulp.
  • Extraction when the crack is too severe to repair.
