Can Straightening Teeth Change Your Face & Jawline?

Yes, straightening your teeth can noticeably improve facial symmetry, jawline definition, and lip support by correcting overbites, underbites, or open bites. Realigning teeth provides proper soft-tissue support to the upper lip and lower third of the face, though underlying skeletal jaw bone or nasal cartilage is not altered without orthognathic surgery.

TL;DR:

Orthodontic treatment (braces or Invisalign) can improve facial balance, jawline definition, and lip posture by aligning teeth and correcting bites (overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite). While orthodontics moves teeth and improves soft-tissue contours in the lower third of the face and philtrum, it does not alter adult skeletal bone structure or nasal cartilage without orthognathic jaw surgery. Proper bite alignment restores vertical facial dimension and creates a more youthful, symmetrical profile.

How Orthodontic Treatment Affects Facial Aesthetics

When people think about braces or Invisalign, they usually picture straight teeth. However, dental arches serve as the foundational scaffolding for your facial musculature and soft tissues. Correcting dental alignment creates positive harmony across your facial features:

  • Overbite Correction: Severely protruding upper teeth can push the upper lip forward and cause the chin to appear recessed or weak. Retracting protruding front teeth creates a more balanced side profile and natural lip closure.
  • Underbite Correction: When lower teeth sit in front of upper teeth, the lower jaw appears prominent. Correcting an underbite softens the lower third of the face and restores balanced facial proportions.
  • Open Bite Correction: An open bite prevents front teeth from touching, causing the face to look elongated and making natural lip seal difficult. Closing the bite shortens vertical facial strain and enhances relaxed resting posture.
  • Crossbite Correction: Lateral crossbites cause patients to shift their jaw to one side when chewing, leading to facial asymmetry. Aligning the dental arches restores midline harmony and facial symmetry.

Do Braces Change Your Jawline and Skeletal Bone?

A crucial distinction to understand is what orthodontics can and cannot change in adult facial anatomy:

  • Soft-Tissue and Muscle Posture Changes: By aligning teeth and perfecting your bite, orthodontics allows facial muscles (like the masseter and orbicularis oris) to function in a balanced, relaxed state. This relieves clenching strain, defines the jawline contour, and sharpens the chin angle.
  • Orthodontics Does NOT Change Skeletal Bone in Adults: In skeletally mature adults, orthodontic appliances move teeth through the alveolar ridge bone—they do not alter the underlying basal mandibular bone or maxillary skeletal framework. True skeletal jaw repositioning in adults requires orthognathic jaw surgery combined with orthodontic alignment. In growing children and adolescents, orthodontics can guide bone growth using orthopedic appliances.

Precise Anatomical Effects: Upper Lip and the Lower Third of the Face

Orthodontic treatment directly influences two critical aesthetic zones of the face:

  • Upper Lip Support (Philtrum & Vermilion Border): The incisal inclination of your upper front teeth provides direct structural support to the upper lip. Bringing upright retroclined teeth forward plumps thin lips and defines the cupid’s bow and vermilion border. Conversely, retracting flared front teeth resolves lip incompetence and deepens the nasolabial angle.
  • The Lower Third of the Face (Mentolabial Sulcus & Vertical Dimension): The height and alignment of your back molars establish the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). Correcting collapsed bites restores proper lower-face height, refines the mentolabial groove between the lower lip and chin, and prevents premature sunken facial appearance.
  • Does Orthodontics Change Your Nose? Braces do not alter nasal bone or cartilage. However, by changing the angulation of the upper incisors and the nasolabial angle beneath the nose, orthodontics creates the optical illusion of a sharper, more proportionate nasal profile.

Can Straight Teeth Make You Look Younger?

Yes. As we age, natural tooth wear reduces the vertical height of the lower face, causing wrinkles around the mouth (marionette lines) and thinning lips. By restoring proper tooth height, arch width, and bite alignment, orthodontics functions like a non-surgical facial lift, rejuvenating your smile and facial contours.

Key Takeaways:

  • Facial Balance: Straightening teeth improves jawline definition, lip symmetry, and overall facial harmony by correcting bite misalignments.
  • Skeletal Reality: Orthodontics alters soft-tissue posture and tooth positions; it does not change adult skeletal jawbone structure without orthognathic surgery.
  • Anatomical Support: Realigning incisors supports the upper lip philtrum and restores vertical dimension in the lower third of the face.
  • Profile Improvement: Correcting overbites and underbites enhances chin projection and side-profile aesthetics.

I can’t say enough about Madison Dental Art. Dr.Chao is the best dentist I have gone to by far. He’s very patient and understanding when it comes to my fear of the dentist. He’s very gentle and never rushes a procedure. He tells me what he’s doing before doing anything. The front staff is very welcoming and friendly they make you feel like they know you forever. They also send you reminders about your up coming appointments. I wouldn’t go any place else!
