Regular checkups are one of the most important treatments for maintaining your dental health. In addition to preventing tooth decay through the removal of tartar and the application of fluoride, your dentist can examine your mouth for signs of disease. Not only can tooth decay and disease be caught in the early stages, but systemic diseases such as diabetes, blood disorders and heart disease can be detected by symptoms in your mouth.
Teeth cleaning starts with the removal of tartar (hardened plaque) that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult to reach in routine toothbrushing. This is done by one of our dental hygienists. Additional procedures may include tooth scaling, polishing and debridement if too much tartar has accumulated. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth. Other procedures performed include fluoride treatments for the prevention of cavities, and xrays to detect issues that are below the surface of teeth and gums.
Finally, our dentists and hygenists will discuss individulized strategies at home to maintain dental health, based on the specific issues they see during your checkup.
